Elizabeth Perry is an electrical work leader at Alstom Transportation Inc., in Hornell, New York.

Elizabeth was a stay-at-home mom and decided to get back into the workforce when she heard about an opening as a train car cleaner at Alstom. While there, another female co-worker was offered a position that provided training in electrical work. Elizabeth saw an opportunity and took it. From there, she began wiring train car boxes. She now supervises ten employees as a group leader.

In a typical day, Elizabeth runs around taking care of paperwork and making sure the wiring on harness boards works. She enjoys this part of her job the most. She takes pride in her work, always aiming for perfection. She does this, in part, because she wants to prove to the male workers that women can do this job too.

“The men are beginning to come around and are better than they used to be,” Elizabeth says, “In my shop, we have quite a few women, and the men can see we can do the job as good as they can.  The way the barriers can be removed is the women just showing them that they can do the job.”

In spite of this, Elizabeth loves her job and her male co-workers. “The guys are very good, they’ve all been very helpful and good to work with.  We all get along great!”
